Quick Bite: A Moment of Science ★★★★
What’s the show about?

It’s a show about science! This show is the shortest podcast I listen to, clocking in at a max of two minutes per episode. The show is produced by Indiana Public Media and hosted by Yaël Ksander and Don Glass. There are thousands of episodes dating back to 2003 (!) – there is a new episode every weekday.

What’s great about it?

I honestly love hearing a tiny tidbit about something science related that takes almost no time out of my day to learn. Glass and Ksander have a great cadence when they host together – and sometimes they host episodes alone which also works for the show. “Science” can encompass so many things – I’ve learned about galaxies far from ours, mongoose ear pollution, airplane contrails, and fogbows. Some of these things pique my interest and I do my own further research on them, like an episode on the temperature and climate of Mercury (I’m sure I learned about that somewhere in elementary or middle school, but I guess the show really brought me back to when I was first thrilled by scientific facts). I am definitely a science person, so I appreciate the diversity of topics.

Constructive feedback time …

Some might say two minutes is just not enough to hook a listener. There have definitely been episodes where I felt like two minutes was just not enough time to explore a scientific concept – unless you have a basic understanding of the topic, it can be hard to feel like you actually learned anything. These are appetite whetters, not in depth educational pieces. I think five minutes might be still short enough to appeal to the same audience but would allow for just a tad more content. Another option could be some episodes that are two minutes and some that are longer, maybe once a week. Other than the length, I have few complaints.

It’s so easy to listen to anything for two minutes — these episodes are shorter than the latest Lady Gaga hit. They’re well produced, have a terrific variety of topics, and have a huge catalog from which to pick – or just add them to your playlist every day and learn a little science!
