This week I was traveling and didn’t have a lot of time to listen to podcasts – but I did hear one in particular that I binged and cannot recommend highly enough. It is called 74 Seconds and it is from MPR News (Minnesota Public Radio). This show is about the Philando Castile shooting in July 2016 by the hand of St. Anthony police officer Jeronimo Yanez during a traffic stop. Unsurprisingly, APM and MPR have created yet another captivating, current program that is journalistic, well produced, and perfectly paced.
The first two episodes introduce us to the players: Castile and Yanez. Since no one on either side of this situation is talking much so as not to influence the investigation and jury pool, it’s fascinating to hear what MPR has dug up that might provide insight into both men. Episode 3, which described the actual traffic stop and the 74 seconds between when Yanez was pulled over and when he was shot (seriously … less than two minutes) made me cry. Castile’s girlfriend’s 4 year old daughter was in the back seat and bullets were lodged in the seat next to her. This beautiful soul had to console her mother as she was breaking down in the back of a cop car after her boyfriend bled to death in front of her face.
I can’t wait to follow this podcast through the trial of Yanez because of the terrific team putting this show together, including contributions from two awesome APM/MPR reporters, Curtis Gilbert and Tom Scheck, who have done tremendous investigative work in the past. Binge this one quickly (5 episodes to date) to get current on what actually happened at that traffic stop, and what we have yet to find out about why Philando Castile died that night.
