Only Human ★★★★

Only Human is another new podcast from WNYC that launched in October 2015. Through personal journal-style stories, we hear how at times, our bodies betray us. The show’s slogan is “Every body has a story.” It is hosted by Mary Harris, who introduces the show in Episode 1 by sharing her own personal story called “Keep the Baby, Get the Chemo.” Like First Day Back, this show occupies a unique space on radio.

I wasn’t sure after the first episode if the show was going to be all about Harris, because it wasn’t clear what was coming next. But once I listened to the second episode I realized each segment would be dedicated to a new person. It has flowed well since then but I do find it annoying when podcasts stop halfway through the production for an ad or to plug their own or another show (this is quite popular and disrupts the flow significantly for me). I get that they need to ask me for money or tell me who did pay them some money to create the show, but I really dislike when it’s mid-story. For a storytelling podcast in particular, it’s almost always an awkward placement.

Like First Day Back, I appreciate that this podcast makes me empathetic for the subjects and teaches me things about health conditions, medicine, and health choices. Most Americans have poor health literacy and it is great to become more educated about the consequences of your health actions or inherited conditions and the options you may have to be as healthy as possible. I love that I am “accidentally” doing this through a storytelling podcast.

** Note for this podcast going forward – I am adding “Production Value” to the “Flow” category for ranking below because I have listened to a few new shows recently that had poor production quality, and it really impacts the flow. **

Sometimes the stories are light, other times you want to cry, but once again I have found a podcast that  makes me feel – can’t ask for more than that from free radio storytelling. Love it.
