filicide definition

Horrific. Evil. Haunting.

The only thing I can’t listen to in this podcast are episodes about filicide:  parents – usually mothers – killing their own children. I consider this a tremendous success for this ear candy of a podcast! These broadcasts make me feel, draw me to listen to horrendous stories about real life monsters.

I have listened to more hours of this podcast than any other. In the beginning when I started listening to anything I could get my ears on, I started with Serial and was hooked. I quickly burned through that podcast and needed a new fix. Sword and Scale had plenty of episodes available to download so I gave it a shot.

Sword and Scale is a true crime podcast that often profiles killers and occasionally other monstrous criminals, as well as the occasional unsolved mystery. It is meant to tell a story, not necessarily to investigate what happened-although that happens quite often as Mike digs into the cases. The podcast is usually 60 minutes long, but some are longer and some have two parts. A great website accompanies the podcast and provides additional material that is not on the show. I love that the podcast includes reference links where you can read more about the stories profiled.

Both historical and current, obscure and well-known crimes are profiled, which makes it a grab bag of violence with more of a focus on “why” a crime was committed than who did it or what were the circumstances around the actual crime. The 9-1-1 tapes that are often a part of the podcast are phenomenal radio clips. It is incredibly gripping.

This is one of my favorite podcasts that has provided me with endless hours of entertainment on long, dark drives at night which admittedly have turned a little spooky for me …

Audible Feast Ratings

Educational Value ★★

Pop Culture Value ★★★

Host Listen-ability ★★★★★

Mike Boulet has an excellent radio voice and is a very good storyteller – especially his timing and cadence. Mike absolutely makes the show – I would listen to any podcast Mike hosted.

Flow (both planned podcast flow and advertisement-impacted) ★★★★★

NO ADS in this podcast as of 9/14/15. Fantastic flow!

Humor ★★

Actually a good bit of humor courtesy of host Mike Boulet – you may have to listen to several episodes to find it but you’ll learn that nothing good happens in Florida and you can easily get off the hook for a crime committed in Canada. But this podcast won’t have you ROFL.

Investigation ★★★★★

Storytelling ★★★★★

Overall excellent storytelling but once in awhile the special guests are not as good as Mike is at storytelling. But the content of the stories – gripping and fascinating.

Makes Me a Better Person ★★

Two stars here because I don’t think Mike intends to make me a better person, but I feel better knowing there are a lot of people way more messed up than me – the real monsters. Remember – I said this was subjective rating!

Bonus stars ★

Amazing gore. Amazing.
